This guide will walk you through connecting your domain from a Google Domain account to your WebDirect website.
Step 1 - Add your domain to WebDirect
To connect your domain to your website, you need to add the specific domain name to your WebDirect account. Domain configurations can be managed on the ‘Domains’ page in the ‘Settings’ tab of WebDirect. In case you need help logging into your WebDirect account, please refer to this article.
Once you are on the ‘Domains’ section of WebDirect, navigate to the ‘More domains’ section. Enter your domain www.yourdomain.com (make sure to include ‘www’) and click ‘Add’. Your domain should now be listed above. Be sure you save your changes by clicking ‘Save’ on the lower right side of the page.
Step 2 - Set up your 301 redirects.
If you recently purchased your domain please proceed to Step 3 directly.
If you have an existing website under your personalised domain please follow these instructions and then proceed to step 3.
Step 3 - Log in to your Google Domain Account
Go to the Google Domains website via https://domains.google and log in to your account. You can find the login button at the top right of the screen.
Step 4 - Set up your CNAME record
Set up your CNAME record by clicking on the DNS button in the ‘DNS’ column.
In the next screen, look for the ‘Custom resource records’ section and select ‘CNAME’ from the drop-down menu.
Add ‘suite-sites.booking.com’ in the ‘Domain name’ field, along with ‘www’ in the field on the left side of the page, which is labeled with ‘@’. The ‘1H’ value in the middle field should not be changed. The fields should look like the screenshot below. Be sure you add the entires by clicking the ‘Add’ button.
Once the item is added, it should appear as in the screenshot below:
Step 5 - Set up domain forwarding
Next, create a forward from ‘www’ to your domain. This means your website will be reachable when www.yourdomain.com is typed into a browser bar; not only via yourdomain.com.
On the main screen, look for the ‘Synthetic records’ section. Select the ‘Subdomain forward’ in the drop-down and include ‘@’ in the field on the left. In the right field, include your full domain.
Be sure that ‘Permanent redirect (301)’ and ‘Do not forward path’ are selected. Your settings should look like the screenshot below:
Step 6 - Setting your primary domain
As the last step, you need to set your domain name as primary in WebDirect. If you have multiple domains added to your account, only one of your domain names can be selected as primary. Your other domains will then be automatically redirected to your primary domain. Visitors who access your website will always see the primary domain in their browser bar.
In order to set your primary domain, go to the ‘Domains’ in the WebDirect ‘Settings’ tab. In the ‘More domains’ section, hover over the domain you would like to set as primary, then click the ‘Make primary domain’ button. Be sure you save your changes by clicking on the ‘Save’ button on the lower right side of the page.
Hint: You can only set your domain as primary if you made the necessary changes with your domain provider. If this has not been done, you will receive the error message: “This domain is not ready to be set as your primary. DNS records could take up to 4 hours to update – please try again later’.
