This guide will walk you through connecting your domain from a GoDaddy account to your WebDirect site.
Step 1 - Add your domain to WebDirect
To connect your domain to your website, you need to add the specific domain name to your WebDirect account. Your domain configuration can be managed on the ‘Domains’ page in the ‘Settings’ tab of WebDirect. In case you need help logging in to your WebDirect account, please refer to this article.
Once you are on the ‘Domains’ page in WebDirect, navigate to the ‘More domains’ section. Enter your domain www.yourdomain.com (be sure to include ‘www’) and click on ‘Add’. Your domain should now be listed above. Save your changes by clicking on ‘Save’ in the lower right side of the page.
Step 2 - Set up your 301 redirects.
If you recently purchased your domain please proceed to Step 3 directly.
If you have an existing website under your personalised domain please follow these instructions and then proceed to step 3.
Step 3 - Log in to your GoDaddy account
Visit godaddy.com and log in via the ‘Sign In’ button at the top right side of the screen.
This will open a menu, with another ‘Sign In’ button on which you have to click.
In the next window insert your username and password.
Step 4 - Set up your CNAME record
Once you are logged in, you should see the ‘My Products’ view. Click on the ‘DNS’ button to the right of the domain you would like to connect. If you have only purchased one domain, the list will only show a single domain.
In the next screen, you will see a list of DNS ‘Records’. In order to change your CNAME record, look for ‘CNAME’ in the ‘Type’ column, and ‘www’ in the ‘Name’ column. Click the edit button on the right side of the page.
After you click edit, you will see a pop-up with your CNAME details (see screenshot below). Insert ‘suite-sites.booking.com’ in the ‘Points to’ field and ensure that ‘www’ is displayed in the ‘Host’ field. The ‘TTL’ should not be changed – it should still display ‘1 Hour’. Once you have completed these steps, click ‘Save’.
Step 5 - Set up domain forwarding
Next, create a forward from ‘www’ to your domain, so your website can be reachable via www.yourdomain.com. You should still be viewing the ‘Records’ section. Scroll to the very bottom of the screen in this section, and locate the ‘Forwarding’ option as shown in the screenshot below.
Once you click on ‘ADD’, a new window will open up. In the following pop-up windows, you can add your full domain name (www.exampledomain.com) in the field next to ‘http://’. See screenshots below. Select the ‘Forward type’ to be ‘Permanent 301’. In the ‘Settings’ section, only the ‘Forward only’ option should be selected. Now click ‘Save’.
Step 6 -Setting your primary domain
The last step is to set your domain name as primary. If you have multiple domains added to your account, you will need to set only one of your domain names as primary. Your other domains will then be automatically redirected to your primary domain. Visitors who access your website will then always see this primary domain in their browser bar.
In order to set your primary domain, navigate to the ‘Domains’ in the WebDirect ‘Settings’ tab. In the ‘More domains’ section, hover over the domain you would like to set as primary, then click on the ‘Make primary domain’ button. Be sure you save your changes by clicking on the ‘Save’ button in the lower right side of the page.
Hint: You can only set your domain as primary if you made the necessary changes with your domain provider. If this has not been done, you will receive the error message: ‘This domain is not ready to be set as your primary. DNS records could take up to 4 hours to update – please try again later’.
