This guide will walk you through how to connect your domain from a 1&1 account to your WebDirect site.
Step 1 - Add your domain to WebDirect
To connect your domain to your website you need to add the specific domain name to your WebDirect account. The domain configurations can be managed on your “Domains” page in the settings of WebDirect. In case you need help logging into your WebDirect account please refer to this article.
Once you are on the “Domains’’ section in WebDirect, navigate to the section called “More domains”. Enter your domain www.yourdomain.com (make sure to incl. “www”) and click “Add”. Your domain should now be listed above. Make sure you save your changes by clicking on “save” on the lower right side.
Step 2 - Log in to your 1&1 account
Please visit the 1&1 site and log in in your account. You can find the login button at the top of the screen (see screenshots below).
Step 3 - Set up A records
Once you are logged in, click on ‘Domains’ in the left-hand side menu.
You should now see a list of your domains. Search for the one you would like to connect. If you purchased only one, it will only show a single domain.
Click on Settings on the right-hand side which should open a drop-down menu. Now select the option ‘DNS Settings’.
After clicking on DNS settings, you will be taken to a screen with multiple sections. Look for the section called ‘A/AAA Records’ and tick the option ‘Other IP address’.
Once you have selected ‘Other IP address’, a new field will open. Enter the IP Address ‘188.8.131.52’ in IPv4 Address’ and press save.
Step 4 - Set up CNAME
Return to the main page by clicking on the menu item ‘Domains’ in the menu on the left-side and click ‘Create Subdomain’.
In the next view insert ‘www’ in the empty field, then press ‘Create Subdomain’.
Now go back to your overview of domains and choose ‘Manage Subdomains’.
The next screen shows an overview of the sub-domains you created. Find and click ‘Edit DNS Settings’ .
In the next screen search for the section ‘A/AAA and CNAME Records’. Select CNAME and add ‘suite-sites.booking.com’ in the Aliasfield below. Afterwards, press save.
Step 5 - Setting your primary domain
As a last step you need to set your domain name as primary. If you have multiple domains added to your account, you need to set one of your domain names as primary. Your other domains will then automatically be redirected to your primary domain. Visitors who access your site, will then always see the primary domain in their browser bar.
In order to set your primary domain navigate to the “Domains page” in the WebDirect setting. In the “More Domains” section hover over the domain you would like to set as primary and click on the button “Make primary domain”. Make sure you save your changes by clicking on the “save” button on the lower right side of the page.
Hint: You can only set your domain as primary, if you made the necessary changes with your domain provider. If this hasn’t been done you will receive the error message: “This domain isn't ready to be set as your primary. DNS records could take up to 4 hours to update – please try again later.”
