How do I configure my website for Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)?
Updated

Configuring your WebDirect website for Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) helps it to appear higher in search engine results, which means you are more likely to attract a greater number of visitors and potential guests.

How do I add keywords to my website pages?

A keyword or keyword phrase, also known as a meta keyword or meta keyword phrase, consists of one or a couple of words that describe the content of a website’s page. The purpose of a keyword or keyword phrase is to summarise the entire page. Examples of keywords and keyword phrases might be ‘hotel’ and the name of your location.

To add keywords to your website pages, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your BackOffice and go to ‘Content’ and then ‘Pages’
  2. Find the name of the page you’d like to add keywords to and click on ‘Edit’
  3. At the top of the page, click on the ‘Configure’ tab. This is where you’ll find the ‘SEO Content’ section.
  4. In the ‘SEO Content’ section, start adding your keywords to the ‘Keywords’ field. Add three to five keywords and separate them with commas.

How do I customise my permalinks?

When you add a new page to your website, it automatically creates a standard permalink that looks like this: www.[yourhotel].com/[article-collection]/[article-name].htm. You can customise your website’s permalinks to make them easy to remember and share with others. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your BackOffice and go to ‘Content’ and then ‘Pages’

  1. Click on ‘Edit’ beside the page you want to customise the permalink for.
  2. Click on ‘Configure’, go to the ‘Permalink’ section and enter your chosen permalink address

Note: if you use this feature on a page that is important for your SEO (Meetings, Weddings, Dining, etc), we recommend that you set up a redirect so that it is clear to search engines that your content can be found through a different link. To do this, submit a ticket to our team with the subject ‘Add a 301 Redirect’ and this message:

‘I have added a new permalink for my [OLD PAGE URL] page. Please point the old page to my new permalink URL at [NEW PAGE URL].’

What are the benefits of custom permalinks?

You can use your shorter permalinks to enhance your offline marketing, improve your distribution or simply clear up your top content. Here are some examples of how having custom permalinks could help you:

  • Shortening offline links
    • Example: www.[yourhotel].com/promotions/holiday-special-2016.htm can now become www.[yourhotel].com/holidays, which is easier to remember, type and distribute.
  • Improving clarity
    • Adding keywords to your article names for SEO reasons might have left you with unclear permalinks.
    • Example:
      • Old permalink: www.[yourhotel].com/about/seattle.htm
      • New permalink: www.[yourhotel].com/gettinghere
    • Note: there is negligible impact on SEO when removing keywords from links – this will not noticeably affect your page’s organic ranking.
