What are meta titles and why are they important?

Meta titles are the titles of each page within your website. They’re one of the first things that search engines look for when compiling search results pages, so they’re key to getting new visitors to your website.

When someone makes a search on a search engine, the meta titles is the main bit of text that appears for each result. It looks like this:

In your WebDirect BackOffice, your meta titles (also referred to as Page Titles) will be automatically filled in by the system. However, if you’d like something more specific and customised, you can edit them yourself by following these steps:

  1. Go to the ‘Content’ tab and click on ‘Pages’.
  2. Find the page whose meta title you want to edit and click on ‘Edit’.
  3. Then, click on ‘Advanced options’ and enter your new meta title.
  4. Click ‘Save’ when you’re done.

Here are some aspects to consider when creating a meta title:

  • Use keywords that are relevant to your property and your target audience
  • Avoid using commas, dashes, underscores or other punctuation
  • Always check spelling to make sure it’s correct
  • Use a maximum of 60 characters
  • Use different titles for each page
  • Use only one or two keywords for each meta title
